Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant are the two new members of the Supreme Court Collegium.

Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant are the two new members of the Supreme Court Collegium, as Justices KM Joseph and Ajay Rastogi, who were part of the collegium, retired on June 16 and 17.

The make-up of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud-led Supreme Court collegium has changed after two senior judges demitted office during the summer break.

Currently, the collegium includes of the CJI and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant.

Out of these four, three members of the revamped collegium-Justice Khanna, Justice Gavai and Justice Surya Kant- will over time become the CJI.

Until recently, the Supreme Court had a six-member collegium instead of the usual five members as Justice Khanna was part of the earlier collegium, though not one among the first four puisne judges of the court, as he was expected to succeed Chief Justice Chandrachud in November 2024.

As court reopens after vacations, the new collegium is expected to have a task at its hands as the apex court’s strength has been reduced to 31 with the retirement of Justice V. Ramasubramanian on June 29. Justice Krishna Murari is also set to retire on July 8, raising the number of vacancies in the court to four. The sanctioned judicial strength is 34.

In the meantime, the Supreme Court has published a new subject-wise roster for allocation of cases to its 15 Benches from July 3.
